Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate
Jared Tawney earned his Master’s degree from Whitworth University and an undergraduate degree in psychology from CSU Bakersfield. Jared’s graduate research focused on Medical Family Therapy which looks at how patients and their families cope with illness and interact with larger medical systems. He has a passion for psychology and adjuncts for Whitworth, teaching introduction to Psychology.
Jared has a deep interest in working with couples using his training in Emotionally Focused Therapy, one of the most empirically supported therapy modalities aimed at treating relational distress. In addition to couples therapy, he loves working with families and individuals on a wide variety of psychological issues.
He describes his approach to therapy as “arming clients to the teeth with coping skills and practical interventions for life’s stressors,” and that part of his job is to place himself in your shoes and give you his honest emotional experience to see if that feeling resonates. He combines theories and techniques from multiple therapeutic disciplines including Emotionally Focused Therapy, Attachment Theory, Gottman Method, Family Systems Theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Person-Centered, ACT and DBT as well as stoic, pragmatic, and existential philosophies. Overall, he’s concerned with what works: Practical strategies that allow people to face their problems, conquer them, and become the heroes in their own story.
In his leisure time Jared enjoys hiking, reading, and amateur carpentry projects. He and his wife enjoy spending time with their two daughters sampling Spokane’s many parks and outdoor activities. More than anything he loves his work and considers it an honor to watch his clients grow.
